Paul and I celebrate Truck Day with a look at the 2011 Red Sox outfield. It would be hard — nye, impossible — for the Red Sox outfield to be as bad as they were last season posting a collective .245/.317/.412 ranking in the bottom five in outfield production in the American League.

But that was without Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron and with a down year from J.D. Drew — and oh yeah, don’t forget about Carl Crawford. I think they’re going to be a little better this season, but by how much?

All that and more on this episode of Fireside Chats.

Red Sox sign Alfredo Aceves

The Red Sox have signed former Yankee pitcher Alfredo Aceves to a Major League deal this afternoon. The contract has a $650,000 base with appearance-based incentive escalators. The Red Sox will have to make room on the 40-man roster for Aceves. It is likely that OF Daniel Nava or P Robert Coello both of whom they expect are the most likely to clear waivers and be available to report to the minors.

Aceves, who has two options remaining, will likely start the season in the minors as he stretches out his innings. While most of his time in New York had him coming out of the bullpen, the Red Sox envision him as a potential starter should depth be needed as well as an additional arm in the pen.

Low risk, could prove useful in multiple roles, battle tested in the AL East, throws strikes — I like it.

OTM: Crawford Community Projections

OTM: Crawford Community Projections:
How will Carl Crawford fair moving to traditionally hitter-friendly Fenway Park? He’ll be good — no doubt, he always has been. But don’t expect the type of statistical jump that we might with someone like Adrian Gonzalez. Crawford’s spray charts aren’t nearly as favorable.

That said, here was my vote:

PA: 645

RBI: 90

HR: 17

AVG: .315

OBP: .365

Drew hammy injury is an early long term DL plant — don’t put it past Theo, he’s “manufactured” injury severity for players to keep roster flexibility before — I think he’ll start the year in the AAA with Darnell McDonald logging the #5 OF spot in Boston.

See — it’s truck day everywhere — not just in...

See — it’s truck day everywhere — not just in Boston.
